Preserving our Heritage Sites

Recently we went to Srirangam, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and other places. It was great to visit our ancient temples and other heritage sites. Whole pilgrimage made us very happy, including weather which gave me to take some of beautiful snaps.

The only thing which made us ashamed about ourselves and our fellow countrymen is the way we treated our treasures. There are hundreds of beautiful paintings in the walls of Thanjavur Brihadheeswarar Temple. Our great ancestors created wonderful and magnificent structures with thousands of great artisans countless man hours (rather man years). Those great artisans never even put their names in their master pieces.

But our recent creatures (I feel ashamed to call them fellow citizens) does not have creativity or greatness to create any such masterpieces but never mind scribbling their names in those ancient paintings.

On the same day of my visit I met around 30 people from the Netherlands. Their guide told me that he visits Tamil Nadu almost every alternate month to bring the tourists from their country. He works for the Netherlands tourism ministry. He praised about our ancient sites at Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, etc. I hope and pray he forgives us for our preservation methods.

Recently Govt. of India started the campaign advertising the importance of preserving our magnificent heritage sites and pass on these national treasures to our future generations.

I uploaded some of the photos taken during our trip (URL: http://picasaweb.google.com/ksvijayakrishna). I wish these images will encourage all the viewers to visit these great places at least once and do all at their disposal to preserve these treasures. I hope we will save these treasures for ever.
